Menopause - Friend or Foe?

Updated: Oct 25, 2024

Menopause is often viewed with fear, dread and anxiety by many women. Unfortunately many medical providers are too crunched for time to have lengthy discussions with their patients about their genuine concerns during this transition in life. Many women are even brushed off altogether by their providers and told what they are experiencing is just normal and there's nothing that can be done. Information about treatment options during menopause can be conflicting and confusing, leaving women to draw their own conclusions and make decisions that may not necessarily be based on the science and current research.

So how can a woman feel empowered and ready to transition through the journey of menopause with confidence and still experience joy and fulfillment in life?

Tip #1 - Be your own advocate

Take the time to do some research and read up on the topic of menopause. Be prepared on visits to your provider to ask questions about information you may not fully understand.

Tip #2 - Pay attention to nutrition

Maintaining blood glucose balance is key for avoiding sugar cravings. Including protein, healthy fats and fiber with each meal will help control your blood glucose.

Tip #3 - Move your body

Staying active is a must! Moderate aerobic exercise and strength training are the best forms of exercise to help with heart health and to counteract loss of muscle mass and bone density during menopause.

Tip #4 - Optimize sleep

Menopause often can bring disrupted sleep patterns due to hormonal shifts, hot flashes and night sweats. Sleep is crucial for detoxification, cell and tissue regeneration so do all you can to optimize sleep. This could include cutting off use of electronics an hour before bed, sleeping in complete darkness, and keeping the room temp less than 70 degrees.

Tip #5 - Mindset

Having a positive mindset as you enter menopause goes a long way to help you deal with the ups and downs of this transition. Incorporating daily habits of mindfulness, meditation and gratitude practice can be helpful.
